postheadericon The use of rectal suppositories

The use of rectal suppositories (suppositories) is indicated for diseases of the lower intestines, gynecological pathology, and also when it is impossible to administer the medicinal substance in another way.

The purpose of this procedure may be:

  • the effect of the drug on the rectal mucosa;
  • the introduction of the drug into the body enterally;
  • rapid bowel movement.

Contraindications to the use of rectal suppositories

  1. Intestinal bleeding.
  2. Individual intolerance to the drug.

Equipment for manipulation

  • Suppositories (rectal suppositories).
  • Scissors.
  • Sterile gauze pads.
  • Latex gloves.
  • Kidney tray.
  • Disinfectant containers.
  • Screen.

The sequence of actions of a nurse

  • We establish a trusting and confidential relationship with the patient.
  • We inform about the upcoming procedure, inform about the drug, obtain consent to the manipulation.
  •  We fence off the patient's bed or couch with a screen.
  • We wash our hands, put on gloves.
  • We take out the package with suppositories from the refrigerator.
  • We ask the patient to lie on his left side, bend his knees and bring them to his stomach.
  • Open the suppository package with scissors.
  • We take the candle in the right hand, with the left hand we push the patient's buttocks apart. With the narrow end of the candle, we insert the candle into the anus behind the external sphincter of the rectum. The nurse must perform all actions quickly and accurately so that the suppository does not melt and ends up in the ampoule of the rectum.

It is important to explain to the patient that during the introduction of the suppository, the muscles of the anus must be relaxed. Forcible advancement of the candle into the anus is unacceptable, as it can lead to damage to the rectal mucosa!

  • The shell in which the candle was packed is discarded into the waste material tray.
  • We treat the patient's anus area with a gauze napkin. We also throw the napkin into the tray.
  •  We explain to the patient that he needs to be in a horizontal position for at least 30 minutes.
  • We disinfect the used material and tools (tray), wash our hands, disinfect gloves.
  • We remove the screen.

If the use of rectal suppositories is carried out for the purpose of the general effect of the drug on the body, it is necessary to empty the intestines or make a cleansing enema before the procedure.
