Laying the ointment in the eyes is used for the purpose of local action of the drug on the conjunctiva. It is produced according to the prescription of the attending physician for inflammatory eye diseases. A qualified nurse is required to have this skill.

For such a procedure as laying ointment in the eyes from a tube or using an eye blade, the following equipment is required:

  • sterile tray;
  • eye ointment;
  • latex gloves;
  • glass eye blades;
  • waste material tray;
  • disinfectant containers .

Necessary steps before the procedure:

  • clarification of the patient's allergic history;
  • informing the patient about the procedure and the drug;
  • giving the patient a comfortable sitting or lying position with his head slightly thrown back, facing the light source;
  • washing hands by a nurse, putting on rubber gloves;
  • if necessary, toileting the patient's eyes.

Applying ointment to the eyes from an individual tube

  1. A sterile gauze pad or ball is taken in the left hand.
  2. With the help of a ball (napkin) the lower eyelid is pulled back, the patient should be asked to look up.
  3. The ointment is squeezed out of the tube over the lower eyelid, from the inner corner of the eye to the outer.
  4. The lower eyelid is released, the remnants of the ointment are removed with a napkin (ball).
  5. The spent ball should be put in the tray intended for it.
  6. In the second eye, the ointment is applied in the same way.
  7. At the end of the procedure, the waste material is disinfected, gloves are removed and immersed in a container with a disinfectant solution.

Putting ointment in the eyes with a glass spatula

  1. The glass spatula is checked for integrity.
  2. The tube with ointment opens, 0.5-1 cm of ointment is squeezed onto one side of the shoulder blade
  3. The patient's lower eyelid is pulled back with a sterile gauze ball and the patient is asked to look up.
  4. Ointment from the spatula is laid out in the middle of the lower eyelid, the patient must then close the eye.
  5. With light circular motions, using a gauze ball, the ointment is distributed over the lower eyelid from the outer corner of the eye to the inner one.
  6. The rest of the ointment is soaked with a gauze ball.
  7. In the second eye, the ointment is applied in the same sequence.
  8. After the manipulation, the used care item is disinfected.
